Welcome to the Corribee website - for all those interested in the Newbridge Corribee and Coromandel. The links on the left will take you to other sections on our site, and the links on the right will open other related sites in a new window (so we don't lose you!). The site map (link at top right) is worth looking at as it gives an overview of all the sections. Check it and you might discover a previously unfound gem.

News June 2009

Jonny Moore is about to restart his round UK trip - Casulen II will be re-launched in Ramsgate on July 4th ready for Jonny to start from Dover. You can follow his progress on his site (note the new address is www.jonnymooresailing.co.uk). Those who followed his progress last year will know that he took the difficult route around the north coast of Scotland in sometimes atrocious sailing conditions. He should be back to the original start in Holyhead around mid-August.

Kudu

This is a long overdue plug for a really interesting Corribee-related site. Nathan Whitworth owns a Mk 1 Corribee named Kudu and his blog gives a very good insight into his life on board. Click here to read about The Adventures of Kudu. At the moment he is circumnavigating the UK and making regular video updates on Youtube - click here for the list of links to all the episodes so far.

Katie Miller

Katie Miller, of 'Round Britain in a Corribee' fame, is one of the entrants in the OSTAR 2009 race which started on May 25th. She is sailing in a Figaro II named BluQube. Each entrant is fitted with a tracker, so you can keep up to date with her progress on the tracking page of the official OSTAR web site. Best of luck for a safe and successful race.

Some more information has been added to the technical section, mainly thanks to Roger Taylor who has again provided some useful information on interior lining, and an alternative to the troublesome outboard motor.

Roger is planning another Northern voyage in Mingming this year:

"I intend to leave from Whitehills, on the southern shore of the Moray Firth, and head for Jan Mayen Island (71N 8.5W). As usual I have six weeks available, and this gives a distance almost exactly equivalent to Burnham-on-Crouch to Iceland (2007) and Plymouth to the Azores (2008). Jan Mayen is about 400 miles north-east of Iceland, has an active volcano (Beerenburg), and belongs to Norway. There is a permanent scientific station on the island with about 18 scientists. There are no safe anchorages but, a few offshore hazards apart, the coast is reasonably approachable, with none of the fierce currents and tide races of, say, the Faroes. This is where a series of unhappy events caused the loss of Tilman's first and best-loved pilot cutter Mischief. The island used to be ice-bound in winter, but this year the east Greenland ice-pack fell short by about 80 miles. If I am lucky enough to get there with time to spare I will head west towards Scoresby Sound (the world's largest fiord) on the Greenland coast, and see what happens."

Dylan Winter - an ongoing film documentary of the UK coast

Well, ok, so it's not a Corribee, but for anyone interested in round-UK voyaging in a small boat, there is an interesting series of videos posted on YouTube by Dylan Winter. Starting in Bembridge Harbour on the Isle of Wight, Dylan is documenting his journey with a small video camera. Supplementing the main video episodes are an equally interesting series of vlogs. Go to http://uk.youtube.com/user/KeepTurningLeft for the links to all the episodes. Look out for Part 25, where Dylan meets the Corribee Kudu.

Roger Taylor - Jester Azores Challenge 2008:

In 2007 Roger sailed up the East Coast almost to Iceland, then out into the Atlantic, heading south around 250nm west of Ireland before turning towards Plymouth. In 2008 he participated in the Jester Azores Challenge. He writes:
" I had a really good voyage to the Azores and back - 21 days there and 16 days back. Mingming was brilliant,as ever. There's one video clip I made that I'm very pleased with - a six and a half minute non-stop take, with commentary, that shows the Corribee revelling in beautiful downwind conditions a couple of hundred miles NW of La Coruna."
Have a look at this video clip - if you are not already a fan of the junk rig you will be truly impressed with the way Mingming handles these blue-water conditions.

Roger's web site www.thesimplesailor.com is, as ever, a mine of information and inspiration and well worth a visit to view all the latest updates.

Corribee no 1

CORRIBEE CLASS sailing yacht No1, the first of her class, mahogany, clinker built, 2 berth, Bermudan rigged, originally built in 1964 near Lough Corrib in Co. Galway to a Robert Tucker Design, totally renovated in 1998 by Lallows of Cowes, main sail and jib as new, Yamaha 5hp outboard, £9,995. Isle of Wight 01983 291997.

The photo is a low-res copy of an original taken by Beken of Cowes in 1999. Their website is well worth a visit - they have a huge archive of photos dating from the 1880's and will perform a search for specific boat images, as well as offering a range of items such as calendars, books and postcards.

Site additions...

The technical section has a few new pages - making and fitting a new mast beam, restoring the Rotostay reefing/furling gear and fitting a Taylors paraffin stove. All this work was done on a mk3 Corribee earlier this year, and is illustrated with photos. Both the mast beam and the Rotostay jobs were, on the face of it, fairly daunting, but in practice turned out to be very worthwhile and not very expensive.

Further Reading...

I have just finished reading "Voyages of a Simple Sailor" by Roger Taylor. More on the 'Further Reading' page - suffice to say that this is a book that deserves a place on your shelf - excellent writing and interesting from the first page to the last.

Site update - Jester News

Jake Kavanagh and Roger Taylor have provided yet more excellent material for the site - many thanks. The updated pages are in the Jester Azores Challenge 2008 section

Pilot whales accompany Roger and Mingming 130 miles west of Ireland

Roger has provided some video clips of his voyage north - the usual internet limitations obviously mean they are not Hollywood screen size but they give an excellent idea of this remarkable adventure. Click here to see the clips.

Jake has put a lot of work into preparing Pod for the Jester Azores Challenge over the last year or two - all of it documented on the Jester pages for our benefit and undoubtedly of interest to any Corribee or Coromandel owner. Click here to go straight to Jake's latest page.
